THE DICKENS FELLOWSHIP
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
About The Pittsburgh Dickens Fellowship
On June 15, 2005 the Pittsburgh Branch marked the
80th anniversary of the signing of its charter.
The Pittsburgh Branch of the Dickens Fellowship was founded in 1925, and our first president was Mrs. John G. Howard. She has been followed by 42 Dickensians who have devoted their time and talents as presidents.
The Pittsburgh branch of the Dickens Fellowship operates under the Charter issued to the Branch by and in accordance with the rules, aims and objects of the Dickens Fellowship in London, England.
The Fellowship is conducted on the broadest social lines; it is open to all, without distinction of class, creed or nationality.
The Pittsburgh Branch is composed of people of all walks of life who enjoy the works of Charles Dickens and who like to discuss those works as well as the life, times, friends, family and colleagues of the inimitable Boz. We are nearly a hundred individuals of a multitude of cultural and educational backgrounds who love good literature, and the Fellowship welcomes all likeminded individuals who hold a special place in their hearts for the works of Dickens.
In accordance with our Charter mandate "to take such measures as may be expedient to remedy those existing social evils . . . and to help in every possible direction in the cause of the poor and oppressed," the funds of the Fellowship, after payment of all administrative expenses, are devoted to such philanthropic and other social and public purposes as are held to be in keeping with the teachings of Charles Dickens. Gifts have been given to charitable organizations, hospitals, schools, therapy centers, and individuals. When the Cathedral of Learning's English Room Committee embarked upon a plan to install rondelles in the their classroom, our branch donated the window honoring Charles Dickens.
We are proud to report that the Pittsburgh Branch of the Dickens Fellowship continues to support the following organizations.
