Independent Study
- An independent study is essentially a course without a lecture
or other classroom experience
- Typically, students seek an independent study if:
- They need a certain course but it is not available in a semester or
at a time when they can take it;
- The course is not available via cross-registration; and
- It is not feasible to take the course elsewhere and transfer the
credits
- You can set up an independent study by:
- Finding a Math/CS faculty member willing to oversee the independent
study (among those who have taught the course before)
- Working with the Math/CS department office regarding registration
procedures
- During an independent study, you will:
- Perform work on your own as directed by your instructor
- Meet with your instructor periodically to ask and answer questions
and to review your progress
- Complete assessments, such as exams, as determined by the
instructor
