Size of the Symphony Orchestra

The size of the syphony orchestra has varied over the past centuries. The early eighteenth century symphony consisted of around twenty players. The symphony later that century had grown to forty members.

The mid-nineteenth century had sixty players. The symphony of the early twentieth century consisted of over a hundred players for some compositions. Today's orchestra contains approximately ninety instrumentalists.
