Dickens Bicentenary Now Being Planned

Dickensians around the world are joining forces to organize a year-long, global celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’s birth in 2012. Dr. Florian Schweizer, curator of the The Charles Dickens Museum (formerly known as the Dickens House Museum) on Doughty Street, and the International Dickens Fellowship has taken the lead in coordinating its own bicentenary festivities with those of the Dickens Family, the Dickens Project Santa Cruz, the Dickens Society of America, the Dickens House Museum Broadstairs, Dickens Journals Online, Birkbeck College (University of London), the Museum of London, and The English Association. Working in partnership with the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Schweizer has enlisted the aid of its students to develop an interactive web site that will serve as the hub of the events now being planned. This web site is scheduled to launch at the end of February at www.dickens2012.org, and its creators look forward to receiving your comments or suggestions.

Also in preparation for the bicentenary, the trustees of the The Charles Dickens Museum have resolved to enlarge and renovate the museum in order to attract more visitors and better preserve the archives and artifacts within it. A Future Plan has been adopted with a vision to redevelop all of 48 Doughty Street and parts of 49 Doughty Street to provide better services to visitors and students. The first step towards this vision is the redevelopment of the entrance hall, which is a phased project. Phase One involves replacing the floor of the museum's entry by March 2008. Phase Two requires the design and fabrication of new pictures, information panels, vinyl lettering, and frames.

Renovations of this type, of course, do not come cheap, so the American Friends of the Charles Dickens Museum was founded “to help the Museum’s ongoing curatorial and educational programmes and to sponsor specific projects by raising funds from annual subscriptions” . This 501(c)3 charitable organization encourages corporations, government agencies, the Fellowship and other organized Dickensians, as well as private individuals to sponsor individual exhibition elements or entire displays.
